Repairs to railroad tracks on Colo. 66 east of Walmart are taking longer than expected and the road had not reopened as of Friday night.
Traffic has been detoured since BNSF Railway began replacing damaged ties on its tracks at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. The work was originally slated to take two full days.
“Required repairs to the railroad crossing on (Colo.) 66 between Erfert and Alpine streets are more extensive than originally anticipated, according to representatives of the Colorado Department of Transportation,” the city stated in a news release posted to its website at 9:15 p.m. Friday.
The city will post updates on its Facebook and Twitter pages and website as they are received over the weekend, according to the release.
Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area. The detour route is available via Main Street, 17th Avenue and Pace Street. (See the map below)
BNSF has experienced periodic issues at the rail crossing, leading to multiple temporary emergency repairs in the past month. Repairs are being coordinated by and paid for by BNSF and CDOT, according to the city.
