Starting December 2, the Coffman Street Mobility Improvements Project will reach a new phase.
Construction crews will move work to the east side of Coffman Street, requiring traffic changes and temporary closures.
This project aims to transform Coffman Street into a modern, multimodal corridor.
Traffic Switchover Details
The construction will be relocated to the east side of Coffman Street, between 9th Avenue and Longs Peak Avenue.
During this phase, northbound traffic will be restricted, leaving only one way southbound.
As the project moves forward, temporary driveway restrictions are anticipated in this region.
To minimize disruptions, new temporary driveways will be installed on December 2 and 3, restoring access to businesses on the affected blocks.
Left and right turns onto southbound Coffman Street from 9th Avenue will remain open, but right turns onto northbound Coffman Street will be restricted.
Phase Progression and Timeline
In order to properly manage construction, the project is broken up into several parts.
Phase 1, which focuses on the west side of Coffman Street, began in June 2024 and will end in December 2024.
Phase 2 begins in January 2025 and conclude in June 2025, with construction transitioning to the east side.
The entire project, which covers Coffman Street from 1st Avenue to 9th Avenue, is expected to be completed by summer 2026.
These changes are part of a larger plan to upgrade the area while maintaining traffic flow and accessibility during construction.
Mobility and Parking Impacts
Parking along Coffman Street will be prohibited on blocks where active construction is underway.
Pedestrians can still navigate the area using sidewalks, cross-streets, and temporary walkways.
Detour signs will guide traffic to nearby streets, such as Terry Street and Main Street, for easier access.
Right turns onto northbound Coffman Street from Longs Peak Avenue and 8th Avenue will not be allowed during this phase.
Drivers are encouraged to follow traffic signs and use the designated southbound lane while navigating the construction zone.
Project Purpose and Features
The objective of this initiative is to enhance the accessibility of Coffman Street for all modes of transportation.
Dedicated bus lanes, separated bike routes, and broader pedestrian walkways are among the most notable features.
The city's 2016 Envision Longmont Multimodal Plan, which encourages safer and more effective travel, is in line with these modifications.
One significant development is the transportation hub that will eventually replace the existing 8th & Coffman transfer station at 1st Avenue and Main Street.
Once completed, this hub will improve public transit connectivity and act as a vital component of Longmont's transit network.
