Library looks to keep kids engaged during winter break

As winter break approaches, the Longmont Library is gearing up to offer an exciting array of programs and events designed to keep kids and teens engaged, entertained, and connected during the school vacation. From gaming tournaments to storytimes, the Library's Winter Break lineup promises to bring warmth and fun to the chilly season.

The Longmont Library's Winter Break programs include:

  • Winter Break Cookies, Cocoa and Books! (2-4 pm on Friday, Dec. 22; no registration required): Please join us for a cozy afternoon to kickoff winter break! Enjoy some delicious treats among friends and to get into the winter break spirit! (treats contain gluten and dairy)
  • Storytimes: The Library will host storytime sessions for young children, featuring captivating tales and interactive activities that ignite the imagination. Storytimes will be held starting at 10 am on Mondays (Bilingual), Tuesdays (Toddler), Wednesday (Baby), and Fridays (Family). Weekend Family Storytime will be held on Saturdays from 11-11:30 am. There will also be a Craft Storytime from 10-11 am on Thursday, Dec. 21 and Thursday, Jan. 4.
  • Tween Gaming Tournament: Mario Kart (2-4 pm on Thursday, Dec. 28; registration required here): Get ready to rev up your engines! Tweens in 3rd through 5th grade are invited to compete in a Mario Kart tournament, showcasing their gaming skills and sportsmanship.
  • Teen Board Game Night (6-7:30 pm on Tuesday, Jan. 2; no registration required): Teens in 6th-12th grades can challenge friends and make new connections while enjoying a variety of board games in a fun and friendly atmosphere.
  • Cozy Crafternoon for Teens (1-2:30 pm Friday, Jan. 5; no registration required): Unleash your creativity during cozy crafternoons, where teens in 6th-12th grades can create winter-themed crafts and projects, fostering artistic expression and holiday spirit.
  • Get-Togethers: The Library will host social gatherings and spirit weeks, providing kids and teens with an opportunity to connect, relax, and share the joy of the season with peers including Tween Club (4-5 pm on Thursdays); Tween Gaming Club (6-7 pm on Wednesday, Jan. 3); and more.

Claire Studholme, Children and Teen Services Librarian and Manager, emphasized the importance of these programs, stating, "Winter break can be a time of learning, creativity, and connection. The Library is dedicated to providing a safe and welcoming space for kids and teens to engage in fun and educational activities during their time away from school."

All Winter Break programs at the Longmont Library are free and open to the public. The Library is committed to fostering a sense of community, learning, and entertainment during the winter season. NOTE: The Library will be closed on Sunday, Dec. 24 and Monday, Dec.. 25, as well as Sunday, Dec. 31 and Monday, Jan. 1.
