A Longmont man who set his apartment on fire in August received a deferred sentence and probation following a plea deal on Monday.

Alan Heath, 55, admitted to intentionally starting the fire as a response to personal crisis but will avoid jail time if he complies with court conditions.

Apartment Fire Sparks Investigation

On August 3, at 1600 Iron Horse Drive in Longmont, police were called to reports of black smoke coming from Unit F-303.

When they arrived, they discovered that Alan Heath had intentionally set the fire.

Heath, a resident of the unit, later explained that he had been experiencing a personal crisis and felt he needed to be rescued from a dangerous situation.

The fire caused minimal damage, limited to the stove area, microwave, and ceiling, and did not harm any individuals.

Firefighters were able to quickly contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading further.

Plea Deal Reduces Charges

Heath initially faced charges of first-degree arson and felony criminal mischief.

In a plea deal, he accepted a deferred sentence for arson and was sentenced to two years of probation.

As part of his probation, Heath is required to complete arson classes and is restricted from possessing incendiary materials.

If he successfully completes the probation period, the court will withdraw the guilty plea and dismiss the case, giving him a second chance to address his underlying issues without a permanent criminal record.

Personal Struggles Behind the Fire

The fire caused around $2,000 in damage to the apartment’s kitchen area.

Heath admitted to setting the fire after struggling with methamphetamine addiction and feeling isolated due to an ex-girlfriend’s lack of communication.

He claimed he set the fire as a way to draw attention to his situation and get help.

Heath cooperated with law enforcement and took responsibility for his actions, indicating a willingness to make changes to improve his situation and avoid further incidents.
