Boulder County said it is launching a new Strategic Fuels Mitigation Grant (SFMG) program to help reduce the risks of catastrophic wildfires to people, homes, property, and infrastructure throughout the county.

The program provides grant funding through the coordination of federal, state, and local wildfire mitigation funding sources, according to a news release. Those welcome to apply include Boulder County governmental entities, private utilities, ditch companies, water providers, homeowners associations, state agencies that manage or own land in Boulder County and nonprofit groups.

Grant funds, of $2 million from the wildfire mitigation sales and use tax approved by voters in 2022, will support forest and grassland wildfire mitigation projects in Boulder County. The county program will provide opportunities to match or leverage other wildfire mitigation and planning grants, the county said.

“Mitigating the risk of wildfire is a key priority for the Boulder County Government and Boulder County residents,” said Commissioner Ashley Stolzmann. “The voter-approved wildfire mitigation sales and use tax has enabled county staff to build on their community partnerships to tackle this crucial work. The launch of the new Strategic Fuels Mitigation Grant program is an important step in empowering communities to protect themselves from the risk of wildfire.”

The program application period is open through Dec. 11.
