The armed suspect who was spotted on CU Boulder’s campus and was involved in a standoff with local police and SWAT on Monday has been identified by the Boulder County Coroner's Office as Joshua Provenza. He died by suicide on Monday evening during the standoff.
Boulder Fire-Rescue posted on X on Wednesday evening that Provenza was a probationary firefighter with Boulder Fire-Rescue from August 2023 to March 2024. Boulder Fire-Rescue said that in March of 2024, Provenza was terminated because he violated the Boulder Fire-Rescue Code of Ethics and department policy.
“The action to end Mr. Provenza’s employment was consistent with our values as an organization and with the expectations we have of all staff members,” Boulder Fire-Rescue said.
Provenza was 20 years old.
