The football field at Lyons Middle Senior High School was recognized as a 2023 Fields of Excellence winner. The school will receive a banner it can display in the stadium and will be featured in Pioneer Athletics’ upcoming publications and annual calendar.
A crew of five spends roughly 20 hours a month maintaining the field during the seasons the field is in use, said Bryan Zwisler, executive director of construction and maintenance at SVVSD.
The district maintains 42 fields throughout the district. Each field requires the athletic field crew to mow, irrigate, paint and perform dirt work regularly.
“All fields in the district get the same attention to detail,” the athletic crew stated in a prepared statement.
The Lyons field was highlighted as the crew prepared to host the first two rounds of football state playoffs in November.
In preparation for the event, the crew worked with Zwisler, the coaching staff, school administrators and the district’s leader to design a paint scheme that was better than the one before it.
“Our grounds crew continues to build on their work and strives to do better every time they paint and maintain the field,” Zwisler said. “It’s a backdrop that is sometimes taken for granted. Our conversations are always around what they learned and how they adjusted their work from last time. This not only shows the care they put into their craft, but a willingness to learn and be better each time they step out to create a new experience for our community and team.”
The crew prides itself on creating an impeccable field on game days with clean paint lines and maintenance that meets high-performance standards.
“Knowing that we are giving the community and the kids the best field possible to play creates a sense of pride for everyone involved,” the athletic crew stated.
