Students in the Skyline High School Visual and Performing Arts Academy hosted an open house at the Longmont Library on Thursday. The exhibit was an unveiling of works that reflect the personal explorations and distinct artistic voices of each student.

While there are roughly 60 students enrolled in the program, only the program’s Capstone seniors showed their work in the library’s exhibit, said Carolyn Root, one of four teachers who works in the visual arts portion of the program.

Some students’ work reflects themes they are exploring as part of their Advanced Placement, or AP, studies. Others displayed art that represented their passions or views.

Elana Vera entered a bird collage, a clay sculpture of popcorn with faces and a whale. She said her art represents her inner thoughts, things that she finds peaceful and things that are good for the mind. Vera creates art for herself but hopes others find their own stories within her pieces.

Nora Smith entered a small bust in the show. The piece was a technical study but also meant to be abstract. Smith’s work is a discovery of the mind, body and the loss of self, she said.

"As people, we want to be very memorable and art is a way for us to leave our mark," said Minh Miller, a student in the program.

The art show will be on display at the Longmont Library through Dec. 18.
