Commercial businesses and multifamily property owners with over 10,000 square feet and more than 75 units are now required to connect to a recycling collection service as of Jan. 1.
The requirement is a multiphase process under the Universal Recycling Ordinance that was passed in July 2023 in support of keeping 75% of the city’s waste out of the landfills by 2030 and 95% by 2050.
“The URO helps build a sustainable community that promotes a healthy ecosystem supporting healthier air, water and soil quality,” a news release from the city of Longmont states.
The second phase of the ordinance will go into effect in June which will require all commercial businesses and multifamily properties to comply.
In January 2025, the ordinance will also require that food wholesalers, distributors, manufacturers and grocery stores connect with organic collection services. By January 2029, landscape companies will be required to compost.
The city of Longmont is willing to work with businesses during the first phase of the ordinance, according to the news release, by making financial assistance available. Businesses in need of such assistance should call 303-776-6050 or visit the city’s website
