Kayak Camp

9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

St. Vrain Creek in Longmont and Lyons

The Young Rippers Kayak Camp, which will run from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm from Saturday May 27 to Wednesday May 31 on the St. Vrain Creek in Longmont and Lyons, is aimed at introducing kids to the joys of river kayaking.

“Kayaking is a great way for young people to gain confidence, develop critical thinking skills, and get some outdoor exercise,” says TCWR head coach Liam Malakoff, a certified kayak instructor who will be leading the program. “This camp is all about making sure they have the foundation to kayak with assurance and safety.”

The program revolves around four concepts, Malakoff says: “Flow, fun, power, and poise.” It will include coaching in proper paddling technique, games, and opportunities to practice boating skills, including how to “roll” a kayak upright if it flips over. Kids will also learn to identify and avoid potential safety hazards, and get introduced to the Olympic sport of kayak racing. The cost is $475.

To learn more about the camp, visit Team Colorado’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/TeamColoradoWhitewaterRacingClub/) or email [email protected].

Big Balloon Build

July20-24

The event is called the Big Balloon Build and it will be only the 4th of its kind in the United States and will not return to Northern Colorado anytime soon, if ever. We will have 75 balloon artists from around the world come to Greeley, donating their time and paying their own travel expenses. Using 125,000 balloons in 3 ½ days, they will build a one-of-a-kind immersive, balloon art installation in the ballroom of the Aims Welcome Center. Life Stories, a charity that advocates for children who have been abused or neglected in Weld County, will host 5 days of events to raise awareness and funds for their programs. Here's a very short video that shows what the Big Balloon Build looks like: https://youtu.be/zP3EH1JLTsQ. The attached press release contains additional information including how to purchase tickets.
