The St. Vrain Valley School Board approved the district to apply for and accept, if approved, a grant presented by Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST). The amount of the funds being sought is $1,600,000. If awarded the grant, the budget for the renovations at the Main Street School would increase from $5,000,000 (funded by the 2016 Bond program) to $6,600,000. Assistant Superintendent of Operations, Brian Lamer mentioned that after talking to the BEST grant committee, it was proposed that the grant could be increased to $2.3 million.
The master plan to complete renovation of the Main Street School totals near $13 million.
According to the memorandum presented to the school board, "The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) Division of Public School Capital Construction Assistance manages a series of programs and resources for capital construction funding. The BEST program provides an annual amount of funding in the form of competitive grants to school districts for the construction of new schools as well as general construction and renovation of existing school facility systems and structures."
The BEST Grant applications are due by February 23, 2018, and notice of award are scheduled for spring 2018. If awarded the grant the board also authorizes Assistant Superintendent of Operations, Brian Lamer, to sign related documents.
