Longmont City Council Tuesday night unanimously approved an ordinance and rules of procedure amendments to allow the council to conduct virtual meetings when there is no emergency situation or declaration.

A majority of the council voted to move to virtual meetings on Nov. 30, given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the current rates of high transmission in Boulder County and of the new Omicron variant, according to a city staff report. The council also asked for changes to code and Council Rules of Procedure to allow for video meetings to protect public health..

“...City Council may conduct meetings with Electronic Participation during non-emergency situations after a determination of good cause by a motion at a prior meeting,” according to the Rules of Procedure adopted by the council Tuesday night.

Councilor Aren Rodriguez was the dissenting vote on Nov. 30. The vote to change the rules was unanimous Tuesday night and was conducted by video conference.
