Longmont has received over $200,000 from the state to purchase Electric Vehicle charging stations.

Fleet Manager Cash Johns said the grant from the Colorado Energy Office will help fund nine Level 2 vehicle chargers and three Level 3 vehicle chargers for the city. Level 3 chargers are more powerful and provide a faster charge than Level 2.

Currently, Longmont has seven charging stations in use. Fleet services are installing electric infrastructure to power the charging stations, which will be used for the city’s electric vehicle fleet at the Service Center, Public Works building, Waste Services building and others.

Johns said the grant keeps Longmont on track to achieve its goal of making its fleet 25% alternative fuel vehicles by 2025.

“All these efforts support a more sustainable city fleet and Longmont more broadly,” he said.

The city has 18 hybrids, 14 electric vehicles and 11 renewable natural gas trash trucks, with more on order including additional renewable natural gas trash trucks, police hybrids and Ford Lightning trucks, according to Johns.

The grant required 20% matching funds, which will come from Longmont’s capital improvement project budget for electric charging station infrastructure.
