Wibby Brewing is releasing four barrel aged versions of their Russian imperial lager, the 9 Toed Nihilist on Friday, June 8, 2018.
This lager has been aged in rum and bourbon barrels for six months.
The 9 Toed Nihilist is "a lager rich with flavors of coffee, roasted barley, chocolate, and toffee — was aged in four different barrels: rum; bourbon; and rum and bourbon filled with Hotbox Roasters cold-pressed coffee, vanilla beans, and cacao nibs," states a press release by Wibby Brewing.
The four variations of the 9 Toed Nihilist include: one aged in a rum barrel, one aged in a bourbon barrel, one aged in a rum barrel with coffee, vanilla beans and cacao nibs and one aged in a bourbon barrel with coffee, vanilla beans and cacao nibs.
Ryan Wibby, brewmaster and president, said he wanted "to create a kind of mocha" with this taproom-only release. "9 Toed Nihilist has so many layers of flavor, and I knew that aging this beer in barrels would only add to the complexity of flavors that we were seeing with the unaged product. I have coffee mixed with 9 Toed Nihilist on Saturday mornings to give me a little pick up. I thought that doing this in a barrel would bring out different flavors in the beer."
Wibby stated that he was inspired by the occasional mocha coffee he gets and new that the same flavors that work in his morning coffee would compliment the flavors of the lager aged in rum and bourbon barrels.
Wibby is very happy with the results of all of the variations of the 9 Toed Nihilist. He says that they have a robust flavor but finish smooth. "This shows the versatility of the dark lager."
For this particular release, Wibby worked with an artist from California to design a creative label for the various beers. The design brings a "different aspect to our brand that isn't typical of Wibby logos," states Wibby.
On Friday, Wibby will have five versions of the 9 Toed Nihilist on tap for patrons to sample in their taproom, located 209 Emery St., Longmont. There will only be five gallons of the barrel aged brew available on tap.
In addition to the variations of the lager being on tap, Wibby is bottling 200 bottles of the various lagers for sale. The beer will be packaged in half-liter bottles and sold for $15. The brewery is not limiting the number of bottles sold per individual.
