I am writing to encourage you to vote for Jeff Moore on Nov. 7 and re-elect him for City Council, Ward 2.
Full disclosure -- Jeff is my husband. Through countless conversations over 34 years of marriage, I have come to know him pretty well, and I believe I can speak to his qualifications and character from a unique perspective. So, let me tell you why Jeff continues to be the right person for this position.
I assure you that Jeff is not seeking re-election as some next step in a political career. Rather, he is motivated by recognition of the significance and magnitude of the work facing the next City Council, and he wants to continue what was started during his first term. Jeff's motto "Creating Tomorrow Today" truly reflects his philosophy that the decisions we make now will affect generations to come. He believes that these decisions should be made with care, using all available information, including citizen input, and with boldness when needed to fulfill the long-term vision for the future of Longmont.
As a person, Jeff has high standards for himself and others, tempered with fairness. I have never seen him pre-judge anyone. He is kind and willing to give of his time and resources if someone needs help or has questions. Jeff is also unfailingly honest, operating within a framework of high integrity. While he respects that we need certain rules in a civilized society, he will work to change these rules if they no longer make sense or infringe on the rights of individuals. A good example of this is his idea to champion, if elected, a charter amendment that would prevent future councils from leasing Longmont’s water to anyone who would use it for fracking.
Jeff is not a political ideologue and is therefore not influenced by the ideology of others. He makes evidence-based decisions, seriously considers the concerns of residents, and has a vision for the future of Longmont that cannot be served by narrow, special interests.
Jeff is also fiscally responsible, requiring that a decision make sense financially and morally. Professionally, he managed large corporate budgets, understands them, and knows how to plan within them. His motto, "The future is purchased by the present," is adopted from a quote by Samuel Johnson. It means that some decisions represent "expenses," while others are "investments" in the future. In my opinion, Jeff is that rare individual who can tell the difference.
Jeff has served on City Council for the past four years, and also on numerous local, regional, and national boards and commissions. He has been a member of our current HOA board since 2007 and president since 2009. He is a problem-solver, studying issues and listening to all sides to gain as much understanding as possible before recommending or taking action. This served him well in his professional career as a metallurgical research scientist, director of manufacturing operations and director of process engineering. He had a proven record of finding ways to get things done. He has continued to apply this experience as an engaged and effective member of the Longmont City Council.
Some of Jeff’s accomplishments on Council include: working hard to restore funding to the women’s health center, stopping RTD’s offensively unfair transit station plan that short-changed Longmont, resulting in a partnership agreement for a revised plan with a real station that will also enhance retail opportunities on S. Main; supporting: composting, the Sustainability Plan and the hiring of its full-time coordinator, litigation of the fracking ban (that was imposed during the previous council), increasing the affordable housing fund, ratification of City policies protecting the rights of undocumented individuals, extending DACA protections for Dreamers/Estrellas, and actively encouraging the Latino community to participate more fully in local boards and commissions.
We residents of Ward 2 are not only choosing a candidate for our representation on the City Council. We are also voting for the future of Longmont. We don’t need an activist, we need someone with experience, broad perspective and vision. Please consider this when casting your ballot, and re-elect Jeff Moore.
