Project Angel Heart, a nonprofit based in Denver, is helping Coloradans with severe illnesses by delivering medically tailored meals directly to their doors.

With the help of dedicated volunteers, the organization ensures that those in need receive both nutritious meals and emotional support, especially during the holiday season.

400+ Volunteers Distribute 15,000 Meals Across Colorado

Over 400 volunteers help cook, pack, and deliver 15,000 meals each week to people across Colorado.

These meals are carefully tailored to meet the medical needs of those battling conditions like cancer and heart disease.

This week, volunteers also packed and delivered special Thanksgiving meals, marking their largest delivery day ever.

Project Angel Heart serves over 2,000 people every week.

Chief Operating Officer Kate Johnston emphasized, “With the holiday, we’re just cramming it all into one day,” highlighting the volunteers' crucial role in ensuring no one goes without.

Growing Need for Medically Tailored Meals

The demand for medically tailored meals has surged, with Project Angel Heart now serving people with over 600 different diagnoses, including COPD and dementia.

Each meal is designed by chefs and dietitians to meet the specific needs of clients.

Since the pandemic, the need for this service has grown.

Many recipients report improved health and fewer hospital visits, and studies show that the program helps lower healthcare costs and reduce readmissions.

Volunteering Makes a Tangible Impact

Volunteers at Project Angel Heart do more than deliver meals—they also offer companionship to isolated clients.

Longtime volunteer Lauren Sternburg shared, “We have the time to chat with them.

They’re just always lovely people, and they’re grateful.”

Volunteering takes just a few hours a week, and the impact is immediate.

Sternburg encourages others to join, saying, “It’s rare to find a volunteer opportunity where you immediately see the results of what you do.”

Project Angel Heart’s work is making a significant difference in the lives of many Coloradans.
