Colorado animal shelters are urgently warning residents about a scam targeting families who have lost pets.

The callers demand a $500 deposit over the phone via credit card.

The Denver Animal Shelter confirms they do not contact owners of missing pets and will only accept payments in person.

Warning Issued by Animal Shelters

Animal shelters across Colorado are reporting a scam that preys on worried pet owners.

Victims receive phone calls claiming their pet has been injured and needs immediate medical treatment, with a demand for a $500 deposit paid via credit card over the phone.

The Denver Animal Shelter confirms they do not initiate contact with pet owners regarding medical emergencies and will only accept payments in person at the shelter.

This scam has been active for several months, with a few victims coming in every couple of weeks after getting the same misleading call.

The shelter is urging pet owners to be cautious and not fall prey to these deceptive tactics.

Impact of the Scam

Scammers are using fake calls to claim pets are in critical condition at local shelters.

The Dumb Friends League Buddy Center in Castle Rock has reported instances where scammers use their location’s name to demand $1300 from victims.

In some cases, the caller ID even shows the Buddy Center’s number, which can easily deceive pet owners into believing the call is legitimate.

This tactic adds to the confusion and distress for families already worried about their missing pets.

The shelters recommend that pet owners verify any claims by directly contacting the shelter before making any payments.
