Fifth graders throughout the St. Vrain Valley School District took to the field on Monday and Tuesday for the district’s annual fifth-grade field day.
For over 50 years, fifth-grade students in SVVSD have participated in track and field events including relay races, tug of war, obstacle courses and a shoe kick competition.
“Fifth-grade field days provide an opportunity for students to participate in track and field events as well as additional fun events amongst peers from different parts of the school district,” said Chase McBride, executive director of athletics, activities, fine arts, PE and health.
Schools are invited to participate in the events for one day. Students fill the stands, where they get to meet other fifth graders. When their event is called, students take to the field. Some events require teamwork, while others depend on the individual to push themselves.
Nearly 550 students participated each day at either Longmont High School or Frederick High School. Students receive ribbons for placing and participating in each event.
“Fifth-grade field days have become a memorable rite of passage for students, marking the end of their elementary school journey and the beginning of their transition to middle school,” a news release from the district states.
