February 17, 1954 - February 16, 2022

Mark Vincent Schultz of Broomfield, Colorado, passed on February 16, 2022, of Pancreatic cancer at his home.

Born February 17, 1954, in Rock Springs, Wyoming, to James T. Schultz and Norma J Jelosek Schultz, he was the oldest of seven children.

He graduated from Valle Forge High School in Parma Heights, Ohio, in 1972.  After moving to Denver, he attended and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer and Management Science from Metropolitan State University of Denver in 1976. Employed as a Programmer/Analyst in Information Technology at Arapahoe Community College, Littleton, Colorado, from 1978 to 1989, and continued that position at Metropolitan State University of Denver, Colorado from 1989 to July 2013, when he retired.

Service to others was very important to him. He was very active in the Denver Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, in the former Gateway District and the new Alpine District from 1985 to 2022. He started as a Cubmaster for Pack 511 in Broomfield, Colorado then moved on to working with adult and youth Scouts. He earned and received many awards in Scouts, most notable were attending Boy Scout Wood Badge (NC-173) in 19991, elected as Permanent Patrol Leader for the Fox Patrol, and receiving his Wood Badge beads in 1992; awarded Distinguished Commissioner 1993, District Award of Merit (Gateway) 1993, Silver Beaver (Denver Area Council) 1998; Bronze Pelican (from Denver Archdiocese Catholic Committee on Scouting) 1999; and St. George (from Denver Archdiocese Catholic Committee on Scouting) 2009.

Mark was also elected as an adult to the Order of the Arrow, Tahosa Lodge 383, completing his Ordeal in 1989 and sealing his Brotherhood in 1990.

His church service was at Spirit of Christ Catholic Community, serving as an usher from 1990 to 2021; a Eucharistic Minister from 1996 to 2013; and a Charter Member of Council 12979, Knights of Columbus, Spirit of Christ Catholic Community in 2003.

Organizational memberships have included Denver Botanical Gardens, Denver Museum of Nature and Science, National Parks and Conservation Association, Adoptive parent for Birds of Prey Rehabilitation Foundation, and National Trust or Historic Preservation.

Mark was a noted rail fan. One of his favorite hobbies was train chasing and riding them for travel and fun. His memberships in the National Railway Historical Society (Intermountain Chapter), Union Pacific Historical Society, National Association of Railroad Passengers, and ColoRail are a testament.
His other hobbies included weather watching and watching sports (Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rockies, Denver Broncos, and Denver Nuggets).

He was preceded in death by his father and mother and survived by his wife Elizabeth K. (Libby) Schultz, stepson Quentin Pitts, granddaughter Kayle Madison Helsom-Pitts, and siblings Carl Schultz, Paul Schultz, Jean Schultz-Olsen, Anne Schultz-Klugman, Lynn Schultz, and Gail Schultz-Rose, plus several nieces and nephews.

Mark’s request was to be cremated and be interred at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Wheat Ridge, Colorado. A memorial service will be planned and announced at a later date. At that time, if not before, in lieu of flowers, he requested that donations be made in his name to any of the following organizations: The Colorado Railroad Museum (Golden, Colorado), Intermountain Chapter, National Railway Society (Denver, Colorado), Colorado Historical Society (Denver, Colorado), National Wildlife Federation, and Rocky Mountain National Park Conservancy.
