UPDATE: Suspect in fatal hit and run captured

The prime suspect in a hit and run crash that killed an off-duty Weld County Sheriff’s Office deputy has been taken into custody.

The prime suspect in a hit and run crash that killed an off-duty Weld County Sheriff’s Office deputy has been taken into custody.

On Sept. 19, a warrant was issued for Octavio Gonzales-Garcia, 36, for charges related to the fatal crash that took place Sept. 18, which killed Deputy Alexis Hein-Nutz, 24. The charges include:

  • Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving Death
  • Careless Driving Resulting in Death

An appeal for assistance in locating Mr. Gonzales-Garcia was sent out statewide. Investigators with the Colorado State Patrol, Weld County Sheriff’s Office, and Ft. Collins Police Services were able to utilize evidence and tips in locating Mr. Gonzales-Garcia in the Ft. Collins area. 

He was taken into custody without incident the evening of Sept. 19 at approximately 10:15 PM.  His first court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 20 in Greeley. As with all suspects, Mr. Gonzales-Garcia is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
