Longmont was named one of the “greenest cities” in the United States in 2020 by Insurify — a site that compares home insurance quotes.

Insurify “selected a city in each state with the strongest commitment to improving the ecosphere — not just on Earth Day, but every day of the year —  as the recipients of the 2021 Greenest Cities Awards,” according to its website.

Cities were scored based on the hybrid or electric vehicles prevalence, driving rates and air quality ratings, according to a news release.

In addition to these factors, the insurance comparison site considered each city’s commitment to renewable energy, states the website.

As a result, PETA, or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, placed three billboards in Longmont, encouraging “everyone to save the planet by embracing vegan eating,” according to a PETA press release.

One of the billboards is located along I-25 near several fast food restaurants including Popeyes, Wendy’s, McDonald’s and Arby’s.

“We get a chance to save animals’ lives and combat climate change every time we pull up to a drive-through,” PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said. “PETA encourages everyone to be a force of nature for the planet by choosing delicious vegan meals on Earth Day and every day.”

According to PETA, nearly 200 animals a year are saved when a person chooses to eat vegan. The reduced dependency on raising animals for food also reduces greenhouse gases, combats deforestation and conserves water, according to the press release.
