Owen Reese earns the silver medal at state hoop competition

In continuation of the Elks Hoop Shoot 2024, the Colorado Elks State Hoop Shoot Finals recently unfolded with more exciting competition in Salida on Saturday, drawing young basketball enthusiasts ages 8 to 13 from various cities and towns including Owen Reese of Longmont.

Drawing a talented pool of young athletes who wanted to show their free throw abilities, the State Elks Hoop Shoot welcomed participants from the District Hoop Shoot including winners from the towns of Monte Vista, Rifle, Delta, Colorado Springs and Northglenn.

In early January at the Longmont Hoop Shoot, Reese, age 12, showcased determination and resilience, securing a spot in the next round at the District Hoop Shoot with an impressive 21 out of 25 free throws.

On Jan 27, in the fiercely competitive 12 and 13 age division, Reese showcased pure hoops excellence at the District Hoop Shoot, sinking an impressive 7 out of 10 shots in the first round and an outstanding 14 out of 15 shots in the second round, with remarkable shooting streaks. Despite his sensational performance, Reese narrowly missed the top spot and entered a tiebreaker challenge, where he clinched victory by sinking 4 out of 5 baskets.

In a thrilling showdown at Salida High School on Saturday, previous winners from across the state aimed for the hoop shoot crown, eyeing a chance at the national stage in Chicago. Amongst palpable excitement, Reese jogged up to mid-court to face five opponents in the boys 12 and 13 age category, poised for free throw glory.

After a five-shot practice, in the first set, they took ten free throws, followed by a break. The second round intensifies the challenge as contestants shoot 15 free throws consecutively, forming a collective total best of 25 shots.

In a stunning display, Deklin Beiriger from Monte Vista nailed 24 out of 25 free throws, securing a spot in the national competition in Chicago. Reese from Longmont and Deni Dzakic from Colorado Springs each hit nine shots in the first set and twelve in the second, setting up a tense tiebreaker for second and third place.

In the thrilling tiebreaker, both Reese and Dzakic matched each other with four out of five free throws, escalating the tension. With laser focus, Reese aced all five shots in the second set tiebreaker, securing the silver medal amidst cheers and applause.

Reese demonstrated remarkable consistency throughout the competition, impressively sinking 21 out of 25 free throws in each of the three rounds. His unwavering accuracy showcased his exceptional skill and focus under pressure at the free throw line.

Reese still retains the possibility of participating in the National competition, contingent upon any unforeseen circumstances leading to Beiriger of Monte Vista withdrawing from the event, offering a potential pathway to showcase his skills on a larger stage.
