History was made at the latest track and field meet for the Longmont High School Trojans as two athletes shattered the school record in the 1600 meter run.
The new record now belongs to Connor McCormick who ran the race at four minutes and 27.21 seconds with Dom Warner coming in just behind him at four minutes and 28.88 seconds, setting the second highest record for the school. The two ran in the same heat this past Saturday at Centaurus High School.
The 1600m is just about a mile, making it an impressive finish for just about anyone.
“It feels pretty great. It’s something I was looking forward to all season and I’m glad I did it,” McCormick said.
“I feel very accomplished and I think it’s very exciting for me to be part of Longmont’s history,” Warner said.
Both students are juniors and, not surprisingly, they plan to stay with the team to try and set more records in their sport.
“Running is super therapeutic to me,” McCormick said. “Runs and workouts are nice because it just gives you the chance to focus on just what you’re doing. And races let me focus just on the race and let all my outside distractions go.”
“Track is just one of my favorite activities to be a part of because of the self improvement and becoming more fit,” Warner said. “It’s something you can see with your PRs (personal records) getting faster and faster.”
Track and Field Coach Scott Dickinson says he knew when both students joined the team, two years ago, they were going to be impressive on the track.
“Historically Longmont has never had too strong of a distance program, and to have these two guys come in as freshman on the track team and run as well as they did two years ago and get 10 or 15 seconds away from the school record was awesome,” said Dickinson.
Due to COVID-19 precautions this year, the season is far from over and they still have another five meets including one this Friday at Broomfield High School. The state meets will be in late June at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood, giving both students plenty more chances to break their own record.
“It’s really special to be a part of this and have all the local community members congratulate the accomplishment that Dom and Connor made,” Dickinson said. “We’re hoping there’s more accomplishments in their future.”
