Climate Action Sunday: Revolutionizing Energy
On Sunday, Oct. 29 at 1:30 p.m., the City’s Sustainability Office and the Longmont Museum invite you to the FREE “Revolutionizing Energy” Climate Action event. We’ll screen the documentary short film “Backlight: Beyond the Green Horizon.” Then, we’ll take a local look at the future of energy. Learn how your electric provider, Longmont Power and Communications, acquires and distributes energy generated by Platte River Power Authority. We’ll explore how these organizations are working together toward a 100 per cent non-carbon-energy mix by 2030. The event also includes learning activities for kids, a resource fair, and energy-efficiency giveaways. Reservations recommended; visit the Climate Action Sunday webpageor call 303-774-4436.
NCAR Explorer Series at Longmont Museum
Head to the Longmont Museum for a FREE talk by National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) scientist Christine Shields about atmospheric rivers in a changing climate this Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. A typical atmospheric river transports more than double the flow of the Amazon river; when they make landfall, they can produce heavy rain or snow. Figuring out how global warming will alter this important part of Earth’s water cycle is a key challenge for planning around our future water resources. Make free reservations at the Longmont Museum website or by calling 303-651-8374.
Let’s get ready to recycle!
The Universal Recycling Ordinance (URO) supports the City’s waste reduction goals and focuses on a phased implementation for recycling collection for commercial and multifamily properties. The City’s URO passed by City Council, and its phased implementation will begin at the same time as the next phase of the Plastic Pollution Reduction Act (PPRA) from the State of Colorado, which bans plastic bags and Styrofoam containers beginning in 2024. Learn more about the URO on the webpage and the State’s PPRA at the Bag Fee webpage. Questions? Call 303-651-8416 or email Sustainability.
Remove fallen leaves
Be a good neighbor and keep fallen leaves out of nearby streams. Rain and melting snow will carry leaves through storm drains directly to local waterways. The nutrients in leaves can harm aquatic ecosystems but are great for composting. Collect fallen leaves and take them to community drop-off events or municipal facilities.
Learn about Longmont’s energy future
Take the opportunity to find out more about our community’s energy future. On Nov. 13, the Longmont Museum will host a free community session on the 2024 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) process for Platte River Power Authority, Longmont’s wholesale electric provider owned by Longmont, Loveland, Estes Park and Fort Collins. Once complete in 2024, this plan will serve as a road map for continuing to provide electricity that is reliable, financially sustainable and environmentally responsible. The session starts at 6:30 pm in the Longmont Museum’s Kaiser C Classroom. Find out more about the IRP at the PRPA website.
Understanding Domestic Violence Workshop
Presented by Ashley Méndez Ruiz, Project Coordinator, Longmont Ending Domestic Violence Initiative (LEVI), Understanding Domestic Violence Workshop focuses on providing the community a better understanding about what is domestic violence. Attendees will be able to differentiate between unhealthy and abusive relationships, as well as identify red flags. Three sessions are available in the Longmont Library Conference Room: 1-1:45 p.m. on Oct. 16; 10-10:45 a.m. on Oct. 19; or 10-10:45 a.m. on Oct. 21. Details can be found at the Library Programs webpage or by calling Adult Services at 303-651-8472.
Visit the Sandstone Visitors Center
Don’t miss your last chance this season to visit the historic Sandstone Ranch Visitors Center, 3001 Sandstone Drive. Admission is free; donations welcome. The Visitors Center is open seasonally from 10 am-2 pm on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays each month through October. Learn more by calling call 303-651-8404 or visiting Sandstone Events webpage.
Make sure to water your trees!
Fall in Colorado can be dry, so it is extremely important to water trees. Soil moisture insulates tree roots and supports the tree’s ability to survive cold snaps. Aim to water trees and shrubs once per month from October through March if there hasn’t been about 1 inch of natural precipitation. Apply water midday when the temperature is above 40 degrees. Water the area using a hose end sprinkler, extending from the base of the tree to the edge of the longest branches in the tree canopy. As a general survival rule, apply 10 gallons of water for each diameter inch of the tree. Learn more about fall and winter watering at CSU Extension.
Longmont Ice Pavilion
The Longmont Ice Pavilion, 725 8th Ave., is a seasonal outdoor full-service ice rink facility, offering public ice skating, hockey, skating lessons, and private facility rentals.
