Wyatt Clark, 11, covets the pucker-inducing Warheads while his seven-year-old brother Marshall is drawn to classic PEZ candies. The two brothers found them all and more among the rows of colorful confections at Longmont’s Scrumptious ice cream and candy shop on 508 Main St.

Their mom, Laura Clark, said she could not wait to revisit Scrumptious, which closed its doors March 26 after almost $20,000 was stolen from its safe, store owner Scott Spears told local media. Scrumptious re-opened Tuesday with an entirely new staff and after handling technology and supply chain issues, Spears said Tuesday.

Scrumptious opened in Longmont in 2013 and a sister store opened in Arvada in 2010.

The money was stolen just as the store’s security cameras stopped working. No suspects have been arrested in connection with the theft. Spears dismissed his staff who had access to the safe.

Spears said Tuesday via email the store opened with a completely new staff and they were learning the ropes through Tuesday. “We haven’t had to do that before but it went smoother than expected,” he said.

Workers still ran into several roadblocks to get the store open on time, he said. “One of our main freezers for making ice cream broke last week, so we had to produce all of the ice cream in our Arvada location this past weekend” and drive it to the Longmont store.

Spears said he also ordered a huge amount of candy four weeks ago, before the new staff was hired, that was supposed to be delivered two weeks ago. The delivery was changed to last week and the store finally got its delivery on Monday, Spears said.

“Unfortunately, not all that we ordered arrived, and much of it was damaged/melted,” he said. The staff went through it all and got as much of it on the floor as possible.

“... But it still looks a little bare inside the store,” Spears said. “We want everyone to know that we are trying to get stocked back up, and hopefully that will happen in the next few weeks.”

Spears said the store’s loyal customers were huge factors in making the store’s return a success.

“The outpouring of love and support has been wonderful and we are excited for the future,” Spears said.

Clark and her two sons were among those who hurried into the store Tuesday morning, not long after the doors opened at 11 a.m.

"I am very happy they are back,” Clark said. “They have all these different candies and I always want to try the new ones.”

Store manager Emma Anthony said people were waiting for the doors to open Tuesday morning. “People wanted to come in before 11,” Anthony said. “A lot of people around here are glad it is open again.”
