Safe Shelter of St. Vrain Valley provides comprehensive services to individuals, families and their pets who are impacted by domestic violence, elder abuse, teen dating violence and human trafficking. The nonprofit is hosting a Legacy Fundraiser on Oct. 24 and invited Denise Brown as the keynote speaker.

Brown is the sister of Nicole Brown Simpson who died in 1994. Simpson was the second wife of O.J. Simpson. She was killed outside her home and discovered with her friend, Ron Goldman. Allegations suggested that O.J. Simpson may have been abusive toward Nicole Brown Simpson. Although O.J. Simpson stood trial for her murder, he was acquitted.

Inspired by the loss of her sister, Brown now advocates for survivors of domestic violence by sharing her story of resilience and hope, building safer communities and knowing the power and control dynamics that can be signs of domestic violence.

“We are incredibly honored to have Denise Brown as part of this important evening,” said Nancy Herbert, interim executive director of Safe Shelter. “Her story and dedication to domestic violence awareness align with our mission, and we know her presence will make this year’s Legacy Fundraiser truly special.”

Brown will be the keynote speaker at the nonprofit’s Legacy Fundraiser this year. The event is designed not only to raise funds for the organization’s mission but to celebrate its new look. This year, Safe Shelter rebranded to include a new visual identity that “better reflects the organization’s growth and ongoing commitment to safety, support and self-sufficiency,” according to a news release.

The rebrand focuses on the survivors and has adopted a new tagline: “we are here, whenever you are ready.” The idea is to reinforce that Safe Shelter is committed to helping domestic abuse victims where they are and “walk alongside them from power and control to self-sufficiency and a new life free of abuse,” according to the news release.

“Our rebrand is more than a new look—it’s a symbol of our ongoing dedication to serving our community with the same compassion and heart we’ve had for the past 46 years,” Herbert said. “This year’s theme, New Look, Same Heart—Our Legacy Continues, reflects both our evolution and our unwavering mission to provide hope and safety to those who need it most.”

Over 755 crisis calls went unanswered in 2023 due to a lack of resources. The Legacy Fundraiser that will take place at Shupe Homestead, 11931 N. 61st. St. from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Oct 24 will raise additional funds to ensure no call for help goes unanswered, according to the news release.

Tickets for the event are still available.
