Longmont Public Safety (LPS) announced on Saturday that a project to repair a sinkhole at Mountain View and Sunset will begin today and will be completed before the end of day on Friday, May 9.
The sinkhole was first identified on Monday, April 21. LPS said on April 21 that the city immediately installed a metal plate on top of the hole as a temporary fix, but that the city would initiate a repair project starting on April 28.No impacts to utilities for homes in the vicinity were reported.
On April 21, LPS said that the project could last between 10 to 14 days. Traffic control was scheduled to be set up at 9:00 a.m. this morning, LPS said. There will be a full road closure of Mountain View and the southern end of Sunset beginning on Monday, April 28 through Wednesday, April 30. Beginning on Thursday, May 1, the south end of Sunset will be closed through Friday, May 2.
LPS said that the road will be closed again next week to complete the work and restore the surface, although they said that it should take one day.
Sinkholes happen when underground spaces, often caused by water or mining, get big enough that the ground above them collapses. The cause of this sinkhole has not been specifically identified by LPS. The Boulder Daily Camera reported that the hole is three feet wide, four feet long, and three feet deep, with these dimensions provided by Longmont’s public information officer, Rogelio Mares.
