LAKEWOOD - Green Mountain High School conducted an early release for students at 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday morning due to a power outage and a “suspicious odor” inside the school.

Despite the power outage beginning before 8 a.m., it was announced to students and families on Wednesday morning that school would start at 8:30 a.m., as normal.

At 9:35 a.m., the Jefferson County School District sent text alerts and emails to students and their families explaining that Green Mountain High School was “experiencing a power outage and our phones/wifi are not working.” The district also alerted recipients that the West Metro Fire Department, the Jefferson County Sheriff, Xcel Energy, and Jefferson County’s Department of School Safety were working to investigate the issue of a “suspicious odor” coupled with the power outage.

Shortly after the first text was sent, the school district followed up with texts and emails saying that the high school would conduct an early release at 9:45 a.m. due to the power outage and “remaining odor from the backup generator.”

A follower on Green Mountain High School’s Facebook page commented on a post at 9:38 a.m. saying that the “suspicious odor” was a “strong gas smell.”

Investigations are still ongoing and the cause of the power outage and odor have not yet been officially announced.
