Office of School Safety set to host School Safety Symposiums

LAKEWOOD - The Office of School Safety (OSS) continues working with agencies across the state providing educational virtual and in-person workshops providing attendees with the tools and resources to create safe and positive school environments for all Colorado students, pre-kindergarten through higher education. In April and May, OSS is scheduled to host thee symposiums covering topics that include:

  • Violence risk assessment of the written word when conducting IHE threat assessments
  • Addressing the intersection of behavioral intervention and special topics in K-12
  • Title IX on college campuses

“Our goal to continue investing in our community contributes to the safety of all students,” said Chris Harms, Director of the Office of School Safety. “The workshops provide attendees with the space to learn from experts, assist in developing approaches that align with best practices and provide adequate support to students while providing attendees an opportunity to interact with our panel of experts.” 

Below is a list of OSS’ upcoming workshops and symposiums with a brief list of topics on the agenda.

National Association for Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment (NABITA) Training for Institutions of Higher Education Personnel

No Charge: Through funding from the legislature, OSS is investing in the community and encouraging participants to attend the day and half in-person workshop with lunch included. Date: April 8, 2024 (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Date: April  9, 2024 (8 a.m. to 11 a.m.)Location: In person, Denver Police Protective Association (PPA)

Topics: 

  • The Violence Risk Assessment of the Written Word (VRAWW) is an expert system designed to assess the risk level and potential for violence present in written content
  • Addressing the intersection of behavioral intervention threat assessment, conduct, and disability support workshop

Threat Assessment Symposium for K-12 School Personnel 

Date: May 6 to 7, 2024

Time: 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.Location: Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center, 4705 Clydesdale Pkwy, Loveland, CO 80538

Fee: $25 for one day, $40 for two days

Topics:

  • Peter Langman, Ph.D., researcher and author including, Why Kids Kill: Inside the Mind of School Shooters. 
  • Special topics in threat assessment including interviewing, using data and students in special education. 

Summer Safer Symposium for Institutions of Higher Education 

Date: May 31, 2024

Time: 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Fee: $50
