The winner of the special city council election on Nov. 8 will be seated on Tuesday, Dec.6, a decision that ensures enough time to have all the ballots counted and certified by the Boulder County Clerk.

City Council this week decided on the Dec. 6 date on a recommendation from City Clerk Dawn Quintana. She told the councilors that although election results will be posted starting at 7 p.m. on Election Day and winners are assumed and candidates concede soon thereafter, certified election results are not due until Wednesday, Nov. 30.

In past special elections, the city has followed the pattern of regular city elections by having the presumptive winner of the election take office on the first Monday following the election, Quintana said.

“However, our recent experience has shown that there may not be a clear presumptive winner of the election at that time,” she said in her report to the city council. “The County Clerk’s Office has advised staff that a significant portion of votes will be received on Election Day itself, and those votes take time to process.”

The winner will be based on final election results certified by the County Clerk instead of on unofficial election results that may be subject to change, the report states.

Sean McCoy, Mitzi Nicoletti and Gary Hodges are vying for an at-large position on the council. The seat was vacated last year when Joan Peck won her bid for mayor
