Help clean seeds while enjoying hot cocoa, cookies and conversation. No special tools required, as we'll be separating and stripping seed by hand. This is a volunteer event for ages 10+ (with responsible adult on hand).
As part of the Resilient St. Vrain project (RSVP), Longmont has been working to restore native plant communities and wildlife habitats along St. Vrain Creek since the September 2013 flood.
Each season, volunteers play a key role in these riparian restoration efforts by transplanting and planting native grasses, forbs, and shrubs in the spring, collecting seed in the summer and fall, and cleaning seed in the late fall and winter so it can be grown out for the following spring. It's a positive feedback loop!
In 2019, volunteers collected swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata), showy milkweed (A. speciosa), and prairie cordgrass (Spartina pectinata), among others.
