Happy Veterans Day to all those who have served. We thank you for that service and for all that you have sacrificed to ensure our freedoms.
Boulder County is hosting a World GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Day event on Wed., Nov. 14 in Boulder. The event is free and open to the public.
GIS Day is part of Geography Awareness Week. Established by presidential proclamation more than 25 years ago, this annual public awareness program encourages citizens young and old to think and learn about the significance of place and how we affect and are affected by it. Held each year in November, World GIS Day events focus on the importance of geography by using lessons, games, and presentations for the public.
Since 1987, GIS technology has become an integral part of almost all of Boulder County’s governmental functions including:
- Emergency and law enforcement
- Floodplain management
- Land use planning and zoning
- Open space acquisitions, operations, and management
- Precinct delineation
- Property assessment
- Public health
- Road construction and maintenance
