The City of Longmont announced on March 10 that Longmont citizens may apply to fill vacancies on city boards and commissions until April 18. The opportunity is part of Longmont City Council’s bi-annual recruitment process for its boards and commissions.

According to the city, most boards require applicants to be registered voters in Longmont and to have lived inside Longmont city limits for at least one year. Board and commission members advise the Longmont City Council on issues that affect the safety, economy, and quality of life of Longmont’s residents and businesses.

Eleven out of the city’s 22 citizen-based boards, committees, and commissions currently have vacancies that can be filled by new applicants. Approximately 170 Longmont citizens serve these boards. Boards with vacancies include the Airport Advisory Board, Art in Public Places Commission, Board of Adjustment & Appeals, Golf Course Advisory Board, Library Advisory Board, Master Board of Appeals, Museum Advisory Board, Planning & Zoning Commission, Sustainability Advisory Board, Transportation Advisory Board, and Water Board.

According to the City of Longmont, the Longmont City Council and staff believe that “the more involved citizens are in the early stages of program and legislation development, the better local government can meet the needs and expectations of the community.”

Applicants may only serve on one board, committee, or commission at a time, and board members are limited to two consecutive terms (except for the Master Board of Appeals).

The application process for each board includes a form that must be completed by the applicant and allows the applicant to upload a resume and other applicable documents. The form asks questions about the applicant’s life, education, and/or employment experiences that would help them serve on the board, about how the applicant can have an impact on  issues facing the board, and more. Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on April 18.

New applicants must have attended a meeting of the board for which they are applying. Applicants may be invited to brief interviews with the city council. If an applicant is not appointed, their application will be kept on file for one year.

The application process can be done entirely online. For more information, contact the City Clerk’s Office at [email protected] or call 303-651-8649.
