On Friday, the Longmont Museum staff and several members of the community gathered in the courtyard to celebrate the beginning of the museum’s $8.1 million expansion project.
The museum plans to create a dedicated children’s gallery, expand the primary gallery space, renovate the courtyard to include a new stage and increase office and support spaces.
“I am very, very excited about this groundbreaking and where we are going to move forward with the museum. The city of Longmont is very committed to being able to support this museum for the entire length of all the councils we possibly have in our city,” Mayor Joan Peck said.
The entire project is estimated to cost $8.1 million. The museum has received donations from several area benefactors including the Stewart Family Foundation, which contributed $5 million, and the Jeff Sands Memorial Blue Skies Fund, which donated $25,000. The city of Longmont contributed $1.5 million to the project.
“It is through the vision, hard work, donations and support of many people in this community over the museum’s first 80 years that we have this outstanding facility, one of the largest and finest museums in northern Colorado,” said Erik Mason, museum director.
Construction on the facility is expected to begin this winter and completion is slated for early 2026.
