Longmont City Councilmember Marcia Martin has announced her resignation, effective December 31, 2024.

Due to family health matters, she has made the difficult decision to step down from her position after attending most council meetings remotely.

Resignation Announcement

Marcia Martin revealed her resignation on Tuesday, stating it would take effect at the end of the year.

Since May, she has been in New York caring for a family member with health issues, which led her to attend council meetings remotely.

Although Martin had planned to return to Longmont in 2024, her inability to do so resulted in her decision to step aside as councilmember.

The resignation comes after a July statement in which Martin pledged to step down if she could not return to Longmont.

She has fulfilled that promise, acknowledging the challenges of balancing public service with her family responsibilities.

Martin expressed her desire to leave office in an orderly and seamless way to ensure a smooth transition for her constituents.

Council’s Response and Vacancy Process

With Martin’s resignation, the Longmont City Council must appoint a new representative for Ward 2.

This process will be handled without a special election, as stated in the city charter.

The Council will have until January 30, 2025, to fill the vacancy for the remainder of Martin’s term, which is set to expire in November 2025.

The vacancy appointment will be made by a majority vote of the remaining council members.

The city’s charter specifies that the council has up to 30 days to make the appointment after a vacancy occurs, which in this case is scheduled to be filled by the end of January.

This ensures that Ward 2 will continue to have representation until the next election.

Martin’s Legacy and Service

Marcia Martin was first elected to the Longmont City Council in 2017 and was reelected in 2021.

She has served as a liaison to multiple important city boards, including the Airport Advisory Board, Senior Citizens’ Advisory Board, and Sustainability Advisory Board.

Her leadership and contributions have made a significant impact on the city.

Throughout her time in office, Martin has been known for her dedication and straightforward approach to public service.

In her farewell message, she thanked the Longmont community for their support over the years and expressed her deep appreciation for the opportunity to serve.

She will be remembered for her commitment to making Longmont a better place for all its residents.
