The Longmont City Council has outlined a timeline to fill the upcoming Ward 2 council seat vacancy after Marcia Martin announced her resignation.
The council aims to name a new member by January 30, in compliance with city charter rules.
Expected Council Vacancy
Marcia Martin, the current Ward 2 representative, is set to resign on December 31.
Her term was scheduled to end on December 2, 2025, but she has been in New York since May, caring for a family member.
Although Martin has participated in most council meetings remotely, her departure leaves the seat vacant.
The council now needs to find a replacement who will serve until the end of her term.
Appointment Process
To fill the vacancy, the Longmont City Council will start accepting applications from Ward 2 residents on December 16, with the window closing on January 8.
After that, public interviews for the applicants are set for January 21.
The new representative will be sworn in on January 28.
This process is in line with city charter rules, which require a replacement to be appointed rather than holding a special election, as the vacancy occurs with more than a year left in the term.
City Charter Requirements
According to the Longmont city charter, any vacancy that occurs with more than a year remaining in the term is filled through appointment rather than a special election.
To ensure safety across hotels in the city, a new amendment has been introduced.
Starting in 2027, hotels will be required to maintain an average of no more than 1.5 calls for service per room to be eligible for licensing.
This change aims to reduce police responses to hotels and motels with disproportionately high levels of criminal activity.
