Longmont celebrates the Queen's Jubilee

Queen Elizabeth celebrated 70 years as England's monarch.

Rain showers rolled in late Saturday afternoon, bringing a feeling of being in England to the British Women of Colorado as they celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee.

The people of England have spent the last four days celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s platinum Jubilee, which marks 70 years since the Queen began her rule.

At 96 years old, the Queen is not expected to celebrate another Jubilee.

Jillian Ivers-Read, a British Women of Colorado member, was born the year Queen Elizabeth was coronated. For the Queen’s 25 anniversary, Ivers-Read attended the ceremony and waved at the Queen while standing outside Buckingham Palace.

“She’s always been part of the British establishment, always there, always calm, always trying to keep the country first. And doing charitable work herself,” Ivers-Read said.

The British Women of Colorado is a group of women who once lived, or had parents who lived in England and now live in Colorado. It is a nonprofit organization that hosts several events for its members including book clubs, social hours and charitable events.

Each year the organization adopts a cause to devote its work to and this year they have chosen homelessness.

As people in their homeland celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee, these ladies decided to bring the celebration to Longmont.

Near Lake MacIntosh, the group hosted a street party in a neighborhood cul de sac. The food, music and games were held a British theme. The food for the event was inspired by what British families might serve in the 1950s with sandwiches, sausages and tarts.

A cardboard cutout of Queen Elizabeth adorned the street party giving guests the opportunity to pose with the Queen.

“For me, it is just a celebration of her and her life. She’s 96, so she isn’t going to be around much longer so it seems like a good time to really celebrate what a good job she’s done,”  Ivers-Read said.
