Last week's Corden Pharma Regional Science Fair witnessed the outstanding achievements of nine students from Flagstaff Academy Charter School in Longmont. These students showcased their science experiments and inventions, earning recognition and awards for their innovative projects.
Among the standout performers, seven students have secured a coveted spot at the state level competition scheduled for April. The advancing students are:
• Ian Pfenning: (Invention) AI Powered Pet Feeder
• Miles Montgomery: (Experiment) Household Environments and Disinfectant Types
• Maya Rokhlenko and Olive Spohn: (Experiment) The Effects of Prescription Eyewear on Peripheral Vertigo
• Oliver Hahn and Isaac Vercammen: (Invention) Hydraulic Robotic Prosthetic Arm
• Ellery Kallal: (Experiment) Misinformation - How AI Can Create Realistic Misinformation that Humans Read as Fact
“The Flagstaff Academy community is incredibly proud of these students' accomplishments and wishes them the best of luck as they continue to pursue their passion for science at the state level competition,” said Flagstaff Academy executive principal, Katie Gustafson. “Their remarkable performance at the regional level promises an exciting journey ahead as they prepare to compete in the Colorado Science and Engineering Fair in April and, hopefully, at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles in May.”
Three standout projects ranked among the top 10 per cent of the fair, qualifying students for the prestigious Thermo Fisher Junior Innovator Challenge. The students bestowed with this honor are:
• Maya Rokhlenko and Olive Spohn: The Effects of Prescription Eyewear on Peripheral Vertigo
• Miles Montgomery: (Experiment) Household Environments and Disinfectant Types
• Ellery Kallal: (Experiment) Misinformation - How AI Can Create Realistic Misinformation that Humans Read as Fact
Their innovative ideas have earned them a well-deserved opportunity to compete at the Junior Innovator Challenge, showcasing their potential to drive real-world impact through science and innovation.
The exceptional achievements of these students were recognized through various awards, highlighting their expertise and commitment to scientific inquiry. The specific awards received are as follows:
• Maya Rokhlenko and Olive Spohn: 1st place in Junior Biomedical and Health Sciences, JIC Qualifiers
• Isaac Vercammen and Oliver Hahn: 2nd place in Junior Biomedical and Health Sciences, Lemelson Early Inventor Award
• Solomon Charlton: 2nd place in Junior Environmental Engineering
• Ian Pfenning: 2nd place in Junior Math and Computer Science, Naval Science Junior Award
• Stella Murphy: 3rd place in Junior Math and Computer Sciences
• Ellery Kallal: 1st place in Junior Math and Computer Sciences, Naval Science Junior Award, JIC Qualifier
• Miles Montgomery: 1st place in Junior Micro and Macro Biology, JIC Qualifier
These accolades underscore the talent and dedication of Flagstaff Academy's young scientists and inventors, showcasing their potential to shape the future of scientific exploration and innovation.
