Two suspects in a tragic Lakewood case have been taken into custody in connection with the death of a two-month-old baby.

According to the police, the tragedy was caused by the child's mother and her boyfriend.

The investigation revealed unsettling details regarding the baby's cause of death, leaving the community stunned and devastated.

Infant Found Unresponsive in Lakewood Home

On July 26, law enforcement were dispatched to a residence in the 500 block of Vance Street in Lakewood.

Police took immediate action after receiving an emergency call reporting an unconscious infant.

When officers arrived, they discovered two-month-old Ezra Johnson in severe condition.

The newborn boy was tragically declared deceased shortly after their arrival.

Investigators initiated an investigation to determine the circumstances that caused this terrible tragedy.

Cause of Death: Methamphetamine Toxicity

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office determined that Ezra died from methamphetamine poisoning.

Authorities revealed that the infant was exposed to fatal amounts of the substance, which resulted in his early death.

Investigators gathered evidence that directly connected the fatal exposure to two suspects who were responsible for the child's care.

These results were critical in moving the matter forward towards legal action.

Arrest of Lisa Marie Johnson and Alexander Avila

Lisa Marie Johnson, 31, the baby’s mother, and her boyfriend, 33-year-old Alexander Avila, were arrested in connection with Ezra’s death.

Both are facing charges of first-degree murder, reflecting the severity of the case.

In addition to these charges, Avila has an unrelated court case in Pueblo County, scheduled for January.

This ongoing legal trouble adds further complexity to his involvement in this tragic case.

Upcoming Legal Proceedings

Both suspects are set to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Dec. 18.

If convicted of first-degree murder, they could face significant legal consequences, including life imprisonment.

The tragic loss of Ezra Johnson has deeply shaken the Lakewood community.

Many have expressed sorrow and outrage over the circumstances of his death, which highlight the devastating impact of substance abuse and neglect.

This case serves as a sobering reminder of the need to protect society’s most vulnerable.
