Kensington Park gets facelift

“The garden will create a new space for the community to explore, enjoy, and find respite along the popular park trails,” the city’s website states.

The city of Longmont is asking for the community’s help to revamp Kensington Park.

In 1998, “The Unity Project” — a piece of public art — was placed at Kensington Park. The piece is a “neighborhood-based artwork, using the faces, hands and ideas of Kensington Park neighbors to make a statement in concrete,” according to Longmont’s Art in Public Places website.

The city wants to remove the grass surrounding the art piece and plant a perennial garden designed by a Denver Botanic Garden designer.

The grass in the area is not usable as an activity space. The perennials are intended to attract pollinators while reducing water usage in the area by 50%. The types of plants chosen are expected to need no additional watering after they mature.

Volunteers are needed to help with the installation planned for Sept. 23. Those who participate will learn more about water-wise plants and landscaping features that can be incorporated into home gardens.
