Galeton Elementary School will be closed again on Tuesday, April 8 after an incident occurred on Sunday at an oil and gas well about a half-mile from the school. The Galeton Fire Protection District notified residents Sunday evening and evacuated approximately 12 residents who live within a half-mile of the well. The school sits on the edge of the evacuation zone.

Chevron crews are working to contain the Bishop Well to the south of Galeton and well control experts are on site. The Weld County Government released an update Monday afternoon stating that “containment boom and other protection devices have been deployed to help contain wellbore fluids away from ditches and waterways.”

The well is currently releasing mostly water with a mixture of some oil and gas. Crews are conducting real-time air quality monitoring and there are no known health impacts currently. They will continue to monitor the situation and update residents. The evacuation order is still in place until further notice.
