The Longmont City Council voted unanimously on February 11 to initiate a lawsuit against Golden Triangle Construction for faulty construction of the city’s museum and police storage facility. The building is located at 10916 Weld County Road 5 and was originally constructed in 2018. Golden Triangle Construction contracted with the city for the project in 2017.
Repairs could cost more than $800,000 to fix or replace the leaky roof with separating roof membranes, according to city staffers. The city council memo stated that “the city hired an expert to inspect the roof, and the roof system appears to not have been properly installed in accordance with the applicable plans and specifications.”
The purpose of the building was to store police evidence and museum artifacts in a temperature and humidity-controlled environment.
The city council memo also said that “the city has provided notice to the contractor, Golden Triangle Construction Inc., of the problems the city is experiencing with the storage facility, however the contractor has been unwilling to remedy the issue at this time.”
Kutak Rock, LLP is the law firm that will be representing the City of Longmont in the lawsuit. The firm serves commercial and governmental clients in business and corporate, public finance, litigation and real estate law. There is $62,522 in the city budget to pay outside law firms in 2025. Attorney’s fees may cost more than $200,000.
The case is expected to be filed in Boulder County District Court.
