A Tuesday car crash roughly a block north of the Colo. 66 and U.S. 287 intersection resulted in the death of a 34-year-old Berthoud resident.
The 34-year-old man was driving a Cadillac sedan traveling south on U.S. 287 into Longmont around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday when the vehicle began a sidespin into the oncoming traffic, according to a news release from Jeff Satur, deputy chief of Longmont Police Services. The driver's name was not released pending notification of his family.
After crossing into the northbound lanes, the Cadillac was hit broadside by a Honda Pilot that was carrying five passengers from Fort Collins, according to the release. The Honda hit the Cadillac on the driver's side.
Police are investigating whether the icy road conditions and speed contributed to the driver losing control of the Cadillac, according to Satur. Investigators also are looking into whether the driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. "No alcohol or drugs are suspected in any of the drivers," according to the release.
The five occupants of the Honda suffered a variety of injuries and were taken to an area hospital. All are expected to survive, according to the release.
Longmont Public Safety expected the area to be closed to traffic until 10 p.m.
While officers have completed their investigation at the scene, further investigation is expected to take a week.
Longmont Public Safety reminded drivers that "weather conditions and road conditions are not expected to improve tonight. Please give yourself plenty of time in the morning to safely travel to your desired location and always wear your seat belt and leave plenty of space between your car and the car you are following."
