On March 26 at around 5:50 p.m., the City of Boulder issued a shelter-in-place order for the 300 block of Pearl Street via an emergency alert. The city said that citizens should avoid the area while police attempted to arrest a “barricaded individual in connection to a domestic violence investigation.” The city activated SWAT as part of the response.

The investigation began around 5 p.m. when officers were called to the residence for a report of a burglary. According to Dionne Waugh, the Boulder Police Department’s public information officer, the initial information provided to officers about the burglary had indicated that the suspect, 44-year-old Aurelio Rodriguez, “could be considered armed and dangerous and that he had active warrants for his arrest.” SWAT was activated out of an abundance of caution.

Rodriguez initially refused to surrender. But just after 8 p.m., the police were able to safely take him into custody. At 8:15 p.m., the city announced that the shelter-in-place alert had been lifted.

Rodriguez was booked into the jail on charges of 1st Degree Burglary, 2nd Degree Assault Strangulation, Third Degree Assault, and Domestic Violence. His hearing is scheduled for tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
