The Colorado Division of Insurance began the process of shutting down Friday Health Plans in July after a growing number of concerns about healthcare providers refused to treat the insurer’s enrollees. Now those clients are forced to find a new plan or risk being uninsured.
“Diving deeper into Friday’s finances after putting the company into rehabilitation, the Division became concerned about its ability to make it through the rest of the year. As a result, I am taking this step to protect Coloradans and the people enrolled in Friday, and to protect the open enrollment process for 2024,” said Colorado Insurance Commissioner Michael Conway. “Yet, as we work to protect people, I am disappointed that some health care providers are refusing to see Friday members and provide treatment. It’s especially concerning because of the Division’s efforts to make sure Friday Health became a member of the Colorado Guaranty Association in order to, in part, protect providers.”
More than 30,000 Coloradans will lose coverage on Aug. 31. The state opened a special enrollment period for Friday Health Plan clients and Boulder County Health Coverage Enrollment Center is ready to assist.
If enrollees sign up for a new plan by Aug. 31, they will be eligible for coverage on Sept. 1, however, those who miss the Aug. 31 deadline will have to wait until the first of the following month.
Customers should note that with the new plan it is likely that they will have to start over with their insurance deductible — the amount an enrolee needs to spend before benefits are truly active.
