The Boulder County commissioners approved the purchase of two Longmont-area plots of land by the Boulder County Parks and Open Space Department on Tuesday. The total price of the purchase was $4.725 million.

The former Sky Pilot Farm — referred to as Sky View in county documents — is about 42 acres located at 10384 Airport Rd. The parcel was purchased for $1.75 million.

“(The parcel) will help the department offer agricultural opportunities to a diverse tenant pool, since it lies in close proximity to Longmont which offers housing and transportation means for potential farm workers,”  said Tina Burghardt, senior land officer.

The other parcel purchased is located between Longmont and Lyons at 6969 Ute Road. The purchase price of the 101-acre parcel was $2.975 million and the property has been under a conservation easement since 1996. There is a house and several barns and sheds previously built on the property, however, no other buildings can be built due to the easement regulations.

The county said the parcels would be beneficial for small-acreage agricultural producers especially since both parcel purchases include the water rights.

“A lot of these properties become opportunities for…in particular, the indigenous communities and smaller acreage opportunities for folks who haven’t been able to farm yet in Boulder County,” said Commissioner Marta Loachamin.
