On Monday afternoon, a threat posed by an armed and potentially dangerous man in Boulder led to shelter-in-place alerts for CU Boulder. SWAT was activated around 3:47 p.m. in order to take the man into custody.

On Monday evening, the City of Boulder released a statement that said that at approximately 11:36 a.m. on Monday February 24, Boulder Police Department received a call about a welfare check for a man in crisis with a gun threatening to shoot himself and others. Then, at 1:38 p.m., the University of Colorado Boulder Police received a call from someone who saw a gun fall out of the pants of a man walking on campus. The witness said the man got in a car and drove away with the gun.

Colorado University police issued the shelter-in-place alerts as a response to these events. Boulder Police and CUPD officers connected the two calls and discovered that the suspect was looking for a woman with whom he used to be in a relationship. The suspect had an active domestic violence protection order.

Officers talked with the suspect for four hours after SWAT was activated in order to try to persuade him to drop the gun and surrender. During negotiations, at approximately 7:15 p.m., the suspect died by suicide.

The identity of the suspect has not yet been released by police or the Boulder County Coroner’s Office. The investigation remains ongoing.
