2021 Sunrise Stampede at Silver Creek High School. A fun run to raise money for special education hosted by the St. Vrain Valley Education Foundation

The Sunrise Stampede is in its 38th year of raising funds to support special education programs in the St. Vrain Valley School District. This year is no different and there is still time to register.

The Sunrise Stampede is a race comprised of a 5K and 1-mile Fun Run. The race will take place on Aug. 12. Participants can check in as early as 6:45 a.m. The 1-mile run begins at 8 a.m. and the 5K starts at 8:30 a.m. The awards ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m.

In 2022, the St. Vrain Valley School Education Foundation raised $18,000 during the Sunrise Stampede. The funds supported 23 Special Education Innovation Grants during the 2022-23 school year.

One of those grants allowed a teacher at Indian Peaks Elementary to create a sensory support system in her classroom for neurodiverse students. The system created a sensory-stimulating environment that promoted regulation and attention. During her sessions with students, she used sensory bins and other sensory objects to reach the students’ goals in language, articulation, fluency and pragmatics, according to a news release from SVVSEF.

The Unified Percussion Ensemble at Mead High School received two drums through a Sunrise Stampede-sponsored grant.

“The main purpose behind purchasing these specific drums is that they are lightweight and more suitable for our students. Some students have struggled in the past with the heavier drums, and these allow more students of varying physical ability level to participate in our ensemble,” the news release stated.

Registration is still open for the annual event which will take place at Silver Creek High School, located at 4901 Nelson Road. Participants can register for the in-person event or the virtual event. The first 200 SVVSD students who register for the 5K will receive free entry along with the first 100 students who register for the 1-mile Fun Run, courtesy of Centura Longmont United Hospital which has been a presenting sponsor since 2018.
