After 75 years of spreading joy through music in the Longmont community, the Longs Peak Chorus is expecting a mayoral proclamation for the week of April 24 to May 1. This week will be designated as Barbershop Harmony Week.

The Longs Peak Chorus is the Longmont chapter within the Barbershop Harmony Society, comprised of more than 700 other choir chapters. A capella — a musical performance without the aid of instruments — is the group’s chosen style and the 44 members perform at various events in the community throughout the year.

“Seventy-five years is quite a long time for any chorus to be singing and putting on shows every year. This takes a lot of dedication and one has to be having fun to keep interested,” said the tenor of Longs Peak Chorus, Dave Waddell.

The chorus was founded in 1948 and Waddell has remained a loyal member for 54 of the last 75 years. Waddell is the oldest member of the choir and has enjoyed every second, he said.

“For some of us who have been singing with the Longs Peak Chorus for 35 to 50 years, it means a lot. We realize how much time was spent learning hundreds of songs,” Waddell said.

The chorus acknowledges the support of the Longmont community in maintaining the organization, he noted.

To celebrate the expected proclamation, the chorus will be hosting an event at the Niwot High School Theater on May 5 and 6. St. Vrain Valley School District high school choirs will accompany the chorus.
