The Weld County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance as they prepare for a trial of a 1979 homicide.

In March 2021, Jame Herman Dye, 64, was charged in Weld County with one count of murder in the first degree of Evans resident Evelyn Kay Day, who was 29 when she died.

The sheriff’s office is seeking aerial photographs of the area of 20th Street at Aims Community College from 1975-1991.

“We know that this is a long shot, but in our time of need we have always been able to reach out to our community for help,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.

People with aerial photography of the area are asked to contact Det. Byron Kastilahn at 970-400-2827. Tips can also be submitted to the Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or at www.crimeshurt.com.

Dye is scheduled to next be in court June 12 for a motions hearing, according to the Weld County court docket. A pre-trial readiness conference is set for July 13.

According to previous reporting, the case dates back to November 1979 when Day was found dead in her vehicle on the side of the road after she never came home from a shift at Aims Community College. She had been beaten and sexually assaulted, according to investigators.

Dye became a suspect in the murder just a few years ago, when the Colorado Bureau of Investigation re-amplified DNA from the crime scene that matched Dye. He was charged with the murder in March 2021 and pleaded not guilty to the charges in June 2022.
